Outcomes in Italy

HIV Outcomes Italy was launched in 2020 in partnership with The Bridge Foundation to raise awareness amongst national policymakers in Italy, Members of Parliament, and other relevant stakeholders on the challenges of living with HIV.

  • 2025 has brought a renewed focus on the role of community services in delivering indispensable care to people living with HIV.

    In January, leading HIV Outcomes Italy members co-published an article in AIDS Care on HIV and hospitals between knowledge and stigma.

  • HIV Outcomes Italy trained 30 General Managers from FIASO - the Italian Federation of Health Authorities and Hospitals - to enhance their knowledge of HIV and strategies to counter stigma. HIV Outcomes Italy also consulted with patients to gain further insight into the possible health gaps and HIV related services described in Aging with HIV from a Gender Perspective. MP Ilenia Malavasi, Member of the Social Affairs Committee in the Chamber of Deputies, submitted a Parliamentary question to the Italian Minister of Health on the topic of HIV ageing from a gender perspective.

  • HIV Outcomes Italy published an orientation document about ageing from a gender perspective with a multidisciplinary group formed by 12 experts from clinicians to representatives from patients organisations and universities. Policy asks were presented at a Seminar at the Istituto Superiore di Sanità in Rome to raise awareness and engage political institutions. HIV Outcomes Italy succeeded in including the issue of aging in the diagnostic therapeutic care pathway for people living with HIV in the Lombardy region. Within the PDTA, approved in September, HIV Outcomes Italy succeeded to have included a chapter dedicated to the care of elderly people with HIV, with a focus on frailty assessments and choice of antiretroviral regimen.

  • HIV Outcomes Italy was officially launched with a presence at major conferences, enhanced by digital outreach.

  • A Steering Group, co-chaired by Mario Cascio and Prof. Antonella d’Arminio Monforte, was launched to adopt HIV Outcomes policy specifically to Italy. The Group applied the Delphi method to capture the sentiment of clinicians, community representatives and institutions.
