Our Membership: The power of multistakeholder governance

10 Years, 10 Stories - Story 1

In 2026, we celebrate a decade of HIV Outcomes. Ten years ago, HIV Outcomes started with one belief: that long-term health and wellbeing for people living with HIV must be seen as a core priority across Europe, not an afterthought. Every story begins with a person, and ours began in 2016 with our first three Co-chairs, three pivotal figures who helped turn HIV Outcomes from idea to practice: Nikos Dedes (Positive Voice - Greek Association for People Living with HIV), Prof Jane Anderson (Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust), and Prof Jeffrey Lazarus (ISGlobal, Hospital Clinic at the University of Barcelona).

HIV Outcomes has evolved from an idea into a structured, multi-level governance platform influencing HIV policy across Europe. This is our starting point: ten years of partnership, ten years of impact, and ten years of building a community that is shaping the future of HIV care in Europe.

Over time, our membership has grown not only in number, but in depth, expertise, and geographical reach. Today, HIV Outcomes brings together, from 21 countries across the WHO Europe Region:

  • 17 Steering Group Members, including our co-chairs Prof. Caroline Sabin (University College London) and Mario Cascio (EATG)

  • 52 General Members, working across clinical practice, academia, community advocacy, policymaking, and industry

  • Five national initiatives (Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania, and the UK). Stay tuned to find out more about the successes of the HIV Outcomes national initiatives in an upcoming Story!

Our community also extends beyond formal membership. Strategic Partners and Observers, as well as our MEP Champions Vytenis Andriukaitis (S&D, Lithuania) and Tomislav Sokol (EPP, Croatia) play a crucial role in amplifying our work and ensuring that HIV Outcomes remains a trusted voice.

Our multistakeholder, multi-national model remains one of HIV Outcomes’ biggest strengths: people living with HIV, clinicians, researchers, NGOs, health-system leaders, and industry partners collaborate working towards the same goal. This model has expanded our reach and deepened engagement across diverse communities, enabling us to champion HRQoL, person‑centred care, and promote evidence-based change at both EU and national levels.

What is next?

Having seen the power of our collective over the past decade, we’re excited to keep growing as an initiative. Together, we can achieve more, and expanding our membership will help drive meaningful improvements in the HRQoL of everyone living with HIV across Europe.
